River Parkway
For 21 years, the River Parkway Trust has put people in touch with nature through trails, ecological reserves, and education programs along the river. Parkway members demonstrate the benefits of protected land, not just for today, but also for future generations.
Recent issues that negatively affect the San Joaquin River and public parks, and that pose signifigant threats to the organization’s efforts to protect and restore land along the river, have made it necessary for Parkway members to ask for your help.
They need your help in two critical areas:
* To keep the Jensen River Ranch Habitat Restoration and Trail Enhancement project on track during this period when state grant funds for that project are being withheld.
* To support our action to lessen the impacts of a recently approved 2,100 acre development, Northshore at Millerton Lake, by filing a California Environmental Quality Act petition to protect the biodiversity of the river corridor and Cottonwood Creek, a significant tributary of the San Joaquin River that runs through the project area.
Stroke Awareness Bookmark

The bookmarks has been printed in two versions, English and Spanish, and ia available to hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, libraries, pharmacies, health fairs, etc. Our goal is to distribute this valuable information to both Fresno and Madera counties, including the outlying areas.
We give special thanks to the CMA Alliance Foundation for their grant, and to the Community Regional Medical Center for funding the Spanish edition of the bookmark.

About National Stroke Awareness Month
In 1987, National Stroke Association initiated and received a presidential proclamation to annually celebrate National Stroke Awareness Month in May. The goal of the annual campaign is to raise public awareness about the full continuum of stroke by managing stroke risk factors, better understanding of stroke symptom recognition and response and improving the quality of life during stroke recovery for millions of stroke survivors in the United States.
This year, National Stroke Association will focus its efforts on educating the public, stroke survivors and healthcare professionals to:
* STOP primary and secondary stroke through risk factor management.
* Act F.A.S.T. to increase recognition of and response to stroke symptoms.
* Spread HOPE about recovery from stroke.
Are You Ready to Get Involved?
National Stroke Awareness Month is a great opportunity to educate your employees, friends, family and community about stroke. But it does require some planning ahead. Here are some questions to think about:
What can I do to raise stroke awareness during May?
How can I hold an online fundraiser during May?
What can I do in my workplace?
What can I do in my community?
What can I do for my hospital’s stroke team?
What can I do to educate my fellow rehabilitation colleagues?
What can I do for my stroke support group?

The major focus for 2009-2010 is the “Stroke Happens” project. It was through the desire of our Alliance to inform the public of the symptoms to recognize when someone is having a stroke and the immediate action to take that could save their life that this project began. The outcome has been a bookmark with that information listed on it that os available throughout Fresno and outlying areas. Let’s all be a part of getting the word out about knowing the first signs of stroke!
The Fresno-Madera Alliance has continued past favorite projects by giving gifts to the children at Craycroft Youth Center during the holidays, and participating at the Girl Scout World Thinking Day. Our members have also been encouraged to bring guests to our health education meetings to hear local physicians speak on osteoporosis, breast cancer, and stroke.
